So the engine is out, time to start stripping to a point we can replace all the things you might consider sensible to replace on a 17 year old engine.
Not too big a job with the right tools and a trusty Haynes manual on hand. The Chinese engine stand (Kathryn acquired randomly one afternoon from a friend she had happened to mention the project to whilst out and about) was invaluable too, the engine ended up spending about 6 months on it whilst waiting for its new home! We stuffed blue roll into the big holes and taped up the smaller ones to prevent anything getting into it. For reference... thick reusable (it doesn't say for what purpose) plastic carrier bags are the perfect size for taping over the top whilst the cam cover is off.
