So a long time ago, we removed the sump to sent it for shortening (here).
Whilst it was off, we needed to scrape off all the old RTV sealant, renew the sump gaskets and have a general cleanup of the bottom of the engine. We did send away the oil pickup tube for shortening too (don't forget if you do do this mod that you will need a new gasket for the pickup tube, could lose you a couple of days waiting for one to be delivered if you do forget it... ask us how we know!)
It was a bit of a pig removing all the old RTV gasket, a combination of silicone remover, a wire brush, a scraper and lots of blue roll and wire wool got us there in the end. Unfortunately, it's just a hard work task while you're upside down under the car.
Note to self... next time, do this whilst the engine's on the engine stand and super easy to get to! We hadn't originally planned to shorten the sump but after seeing it sticking out a mile beneath the car it was a no brainer to get it done instead of smashing it open on a speed bump and dealing with the consequences later on...
A long time later, we finally got the sump back, shortened, aqua blasted and nicely painted black courtesy of GBS and their awesome fabricators (This is a service they now offer, so give them a call).
The sump still sticks out a smidge below the chassis (15mm maybe) - but it's no worse than the bottom of the bellhousing now, so you are more likely to slide nicely over a speed bump, rather than stop dead and leave all your engine oil all over it!
Before - the side panel isn't attached to the car so it's hanging down slightly and doesn't show the full extent to which the sump sticks out but it was roughly 50mm we think. It may not sound like a lot but when your ride height is set to 120mm and speed bumps can be up to 100mm... You do the math...
After - roughly 15mm sticking out - much better!
Many expletives were muttered a bit later on in the build once Matt realised he'd left out some of the bolts that attach the bellhousing to the engine sump.
Top tip - check and double check you've finished everything under the car before you take it off its build trolley!
