Sooo... Fitting the rear arches was one of the trickier jobs that took a lot of head scratching.
Top tip - It's worth noting before you start this job that you really need to get your rear wheel alignment as close to correct as you can as it makes a massive difference to where the wheel sits against the body - if you are planning on making new mounting holes in the body to centre the wheel in the arch then you really need to get that sorted first!
We also removed the shocks and sat the wheels on an adjustable height stool to get it roughly where it would be when the car is on the ground to help with eyeing it in.
Frustratingly we just couldn't centre the left rear wheel and had to think about it for a few days... We came back to it having been through the GBS Facebook page and discussed our options at length and concluded that the rear arches would need to sit further back than GBS had intended to make them look right.
So we set to it again...
We decided to try the right side and this centred on the wheel significantly better so we marked up the body and made new mounting holes for the rivnuts.
We then measured up and mounted the left side to be in the same place, it's not as centred as well as the right side but you cant see both sides at the same time anyway and its the best we could do... Who's going to know... apart from us (and all the people reading this page)!
Having now fixed the wheel arches in place it's left us with a gap against the tub as they now sit further back and overhang onto the curved rear edge.
At this point we have already decided that we are going to paint to majority of the car so we filled up the gap with body filler and sanded it to back so that it blends in well with the contours of the arches. Hopefully once they have been painted you won't be able to tell that a bit of bodgery happened here and all you will see its our beautifully centred wheels!
Fortunately the front wheel arches are much more straight forward to fit! The cycle wings bolt straight onto the uprights and from there you just need to get the flat top of the wheel arch levelish and notch out where the cycle wings come through the inside edge to get it to sit down onto the cycle wing arms.
Mark and drill the holes for the indicators and that's about it other than bonding them into place - this will be done at a later point after they have been painted. We also plan to attach mud flaps to save us, and the car, from stones being thrown up from the front wheels but this will be a post IVA modification.
Just bear in mind that to pass IVA the wheel arch needs to cover the whole width of the tyre and it also needs to have trim on all the edges.
