And so it begins!
Whilst unable to collect the GBS kit for a few months whilst it's being fabricated, Kathryn made a start doing what she does best, tearing things off the Shazda, crowbar in one hand, lump hammer in the other and a smile on her face!
One by one, parts start coming off.
We needed to salvage:
Rear hubs
Rear brake calipers
Rear half shafts
Diff
Propshaft
5 speed gearbox
Engine and loom
Steering column and linkage
Indicator stalks
Brake and clutch master cylinders
Whilst lashing it down with rain, the bonnet makes a surprisingly good umbrella!
We were amazed by the parts we managed to sell out of this thing. It ended up paying for itself and more
Still looks like a car, but it's missing A LOT of crucial components. You certainly won't be hotwiring it any time soon!
Donor financials:
BOJ cost us £1150, we've recovered £1462, £312 in hand so far! Not bad, considering we kept the entire drivetrain and some other bits and pieces for our build!
We Sold:
£560 - Catalytic converter (for scrap, absolute winner)
£15 - Exhaust
£200 - Roof
£150 - Wheels
£80 - Carpets (If you can believe it)
£75 - Seats
£22 - Intake manifold
£40 - Tonneau cover
£100 - Bumpers (both)
£40 - Steering rack
£20 - A headlight
£60 - A door and a rusty rear wing (removed with angle grinder)
£10 - Rear light cluster
£80 - Bonnet
£20 - Exhaust manifold
The rear wheel bearings were pretty stuck in the uprights. Had the 10t press up to about 8.5t and when they came out, they came out with a decent bang!
Helpful tips...
On the parts that you are keeping, after removing an item, put the bolts back in the hole or put the nut back on the thread. This will save A LOT of searching later on. Kathryn did this with most things but there were a few that took a lot of hunting down!
Don't get rid of the donor too early in the build as even now, several months in, we are still finding parts we need from it. We have been able to sell the odd part or two from it as well. Things we forgot to remove that we can recall...
Brake master cylinder pipe fittings - these are a silly Mazda thread...
Cam and VVT sensor connectors
Ignition barrel connector with a few inches of cable
An assortment of nuts and bolts from various places on the car - again with silly Mazda threads or in odd sizes...
Oh... and in hindsight... keep your old wheel bearings. These will come in handy when pressing the new ones in...
